DIED, after a lingering illness, on
Thursday morning, at half past 8 o'clock, at the residence of Mr. George Green,
near St. Joseph's Perry Co., Ohio. Mr. Nicholas Zahm, aged 87 years.
The subject of this notice was born
at Olsburg, in Wolminster County, Germany, on the 2nd day of April, 1787, and
moved to this country at the age of 42 years. After landing at New York City,
he purchased a horse and wagon and in his humble way, he moved his little
family across the mountains to Wayne County, Ohio, where he resided till the
year 1838, when he moved to Perry County, Ohio, where he purchased a small farm
near St. Joseph's, on which he lived for many years. Becoming old and feeble,
he sold his farm to his daughter, Mrs. Beber, and chose his home with his
son-in-law Mr. George Green, where he died, as will be seen, on the morning of
his 87th birthday. Mr. Zahm was a quiet, inoffensive man; honest and
industrious; a strict member of the Catholic church; without an enemy on earth,
he has left an example worthy of imitation. He left four sons and four
daughters together with one hundred grand and great grand children to mourn his
loss.

PETER ZAHM 50TH ANNIVERSARY
MR. and MRS. PETER ZAHM CELEBRATE GOLDEN ANNIVERSARY
Mrs. Nicholas Fisher, the Bridesmaid, Present--Another
Couple to Observe Happy Event
____________________________
Fifty years ago today, October 24, Mr. and Mrs. Peter Zahm
were united in Marriage in this city. Today surrounded by their family,
relatives and their friends, the fiftieth anniversary was celebrated in an
auspicious manner.
Peter Zahm was born in Hessendarmstadt, Germany, October 3,
1826; he came to this country in 1846 and soon afterwards located in this city
where he engaged at his trade of a merchant tailor. His good wife is a native
of Bavaria, Germany. She came to this country in 1853, making the journey
alone. She met Peter Zahm and on October 24, 1855, they were married here in
the old St. Peter and Paul's Church, then a log structure. They continued as
residents of Huntington, living most respectable lives, raising a happy family,
and advanced in age with the development of the city. The officiating clergyman
at their wedding fifty years ago was, Father Faller, of Fort Wayne, when the
Huntington church was then on that circuit. The groomsman was Nicholas Fisher,
now deceased, and the bridesmaid was Mrs. Nicholas Fisher.
Golden wedding ceremony services were conducted at the St.
Peter and Paul's Church this morning, beginning at 8 o'clock mass by Father
Heusen. A novel feature was the appearance of Mrs. Fisher who officiated as an
attendant to Mr. and Mrs. Zahm as she had done a half century before. After the
services, the bridal party received many congratulations.
At the age of 79 and 70 respectively, Mr. and Mrs. Zahm are
in comparatively good health, and may see many years ahead of them. An all-day
affair was held at the Zahm home at 33 Oak Street today, at which were present
many of the immediate family, relatives, neighbors and friends. Among the
out-of-town guests in attendance were: Mrs. George and Mrs. Hertie, of Antwerp,
Ohio, Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Zahm and two sons, Mr. and Mrs. Limbach and son, and
Joseph Auer, of Delphos, Ohio, Mrs. Elizabeth Guethler, of Laporte, Mr. and
Mrs. Frank Knecht and Miss Lizzie Zahm, of Fort Wayne; Mr. and Mrs. Mote
Doughitt, of Indian Territory. Mr. Zahm's only sister, Mrs. Sophia Johnson,
aged 89, of Clear Creek Township, was among the guests; Andrew Zahm, and family
and Mrs. Peter Bauer and family, of this city, were children present. George
Zahm, of Grand Rapids, was the only member of the family absent. The aged
couple were the recipients of many fine presents.
Buried in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Huntington County,
Indiana, Section D Lot 78W.

BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH: "The
History of Perry County, Ohio - 1883"
ANDERSON, CATHARINE C., Pike
Township, Maholm post office, Ohio; farmer's wife; was born July 17, 1821, in
Germany, daughter of Nicholas Zahm and Elizabeth (Coheart) Zahm. Mrs. Anderson
lived in Germany until she was eight years of age, when she came with her
parents to America, taking ship at Havre De Grace and landing in Philadelphia,
where they bought a horse and wagon and drove to Wooster, Ohio, and from thence
to East Union, Wayne County, Ohio, where her father entered eighty acres of
land, upon which he lived for ten years, when he moved within five miles of
Somerset, this county, where he bought fifty acres of land and lived
twenty-five years. At this time he went to Indiana, where he spent about nine
years with his sons, Peter, Jacob, and George, after which he returned, and
lived with Mrs. George Green up to the time of his death, dying at the age of
eighty-seven years, and upon his birthday, near St. Joseph's Academy. Mrs.
Anderson was married, January 6, 1840, to William D., son of Daniel and Anna
(Hendrickson) Anderson, who was born March 5, 1819, in Pickaway County, Ohio,
but was living at St. Joseph's Academy at the time of his marriage. After their
marriage they lived for two years one mile south of the above named Academy;
from thence they moved to Hocking County, Ohio, where they lived six years, and
again returned to about the same place they removed from, remaining this time
about two years, when they came to where Mrs. Anderson still lives, at Bristol
Station, in April of 1854, where he bought eighty acres of land, upon which he
made all the improvement; supplanting the log house be a neat frame dwelling,
and gave most of his attention to farming. He, in his life, gave considerable
attention to the running of a saw mill, having owned one about seventeen years;
and after running a portable mill about five years, he sent it to Indiana,
where his sons are now using it. He also owned eighty acres east of the present
home, but sold forty acres of that tract, which leaves one hundred and twenty
acres in all. He was station agent on the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, and
postmaster at Bristol Station, and kept a dry-good and grocery store at the
same place and same time, up to the time of his death. Mrs. Anderson has opened
a grocery store at Bristol Station, in co partnership with her daughter, Agusta
Irene, who is, at this time, station agent and postmaster at the above place.
Sarah A. is assistant postmaster, and France A. C. is general assistant at both
the store and post-office. Mr. and Mrs. Anderson became the parents of thirteen
children, viz.: Philamon A., Mary E., (deceased), Adrian C., Daniel S., Emily
H., (deceased), Thomas Mc., Agnes P., Margaret A. (deceased), Cecily C.
(deceased), William N. (deceased), Augusta I., Sarah A., and France A. C.

two years, Mrs. Catherine C. Anderson, aged 76 years, 8 months and 18 days.
Mrs. Anderson was born in Germany, July 17, 1821.
She lived in Germany until about 8
years old when she came with her parents to America taking ship at Havre De
Grace and landing in Philadelphia, she came by wagon to Wooster, Ohio, thence
to East Union, Wayne County, where she lived with her parents 10 years; then
came to St. Joseph's, Perry County and lived on what is known as Martin
Bletzacker's place where she met, loved and wedded W. D. Anderson, on January
6, 1840. After their marriage they lived two years one mile south of St,
Joseph's, from thence they moved to Hocking County, where they lived 6 years
and again returning to about the same place they removed from, remaining this
time about two years when she moved to Bristol Station, where she spent the
rest of her life, about 46 years. She was the mother of thirteen children,
eight of whom has gone to their eternal place. Her husband preceded her to his
eternal resting place, about 18 years. All these years she has been a true and
faithful servant of her Maker so that she would be prepared to meet her beloved
husband and children. She was a devoted mother, a true and faithful Christian,
a kind neighbor always ready to lend a helping hand in time of sickness and
need. Two daughters, three sons, two sisters and three brothers is left to

OBITUARY
Died, Saturday evening, September
18, 1880, Mr. William D. Anderson, aged 61 years, 6 months and 13 days. He was
the father of 13 children, eight daughters and five sons; four daughters and
one son have gone before him to the grave. They left this world of false joys
and happiness to join the choir of angels and saints to enjoy eternal happiness
forever. He, too, has followed them, and is placed in earth's cold bed, to be
no more in the torments of this world, but he bore his troubles with patience,
for the love of God. He was a devoted and loving husband and parent, a kind
neighbor and friend, the idol of his household, and a generous, charitable
citizen, loved and respected by all who knew him. Heavy and grievous to be
borne is the hand of affliction laid upon the surviving wife and children. God
knows best. He giveth and he taketh away, and blessed are they that fear not
the Lord. May the Angels of Peace and Hope pour the oil of consolation into
their troubled hearts, and may they find comfort in the knowledge that he whom
they loved and who loved them so well, has gone to dwell at last in his
heavenly home.
He's gone, a tender chord is riven,
But he is happier there,
Nor would I call him back from
Heaven.
To breathe ever this bright air.
His earthly work forever done,
And on his brow so white
The starry crown he's proudly won,
Gleams 'mid the cypress bright.

Miss Anderson, a young lady, about eighteen years of age,
died suddenly at her home, near Bristol station, last Thursday. She had been
well and buoyant, until a few minutes before her death.
Newspaper Article
Through an oversight we failed to notice last week, the sad
and very sudden death of Miss Francis Anderson, a young lady at Maholm, and
sister-in-law of Mr. H. Beach, of our town. This deplorable monster visitor
comes when least expected, is never welcome, though inevitable sooner or later.
We may as well be resigned and prepare ourselves. This young lady was nineteen
years of age, had many rare accomplishments, was entertaining, social,
harmless, charitable, and above all a faithful Christian. To be cut off from
her friends and relations so suddenly is almost an unbearable shock. But let
the Lord's will be done. Her remains were interred at St. Patrick's Cemetery.

House and Farm Buildings are
Consumed
Loss is Almost $10,000.00
Insurance Amounting to $3,500.00 is
Carried--Fire Catches From Chimney
With a good start and no opposition,
fire made fast inroads among the buildings on the Jacob Zahm farm, three miles
northwest of the city, Sunday morning, consuming everything in sight. At a
rough estimate the loss is figured between $8,000.00 and $10,000.00 with
$3,00.00 insurance.
The fire was discovered by Mr. Zahm
at about 9:45 o'clock Sunday morning. It had been raging some time before being
discovered. The crackling noise made by the flames was heard for some time
before the true cause was realized. Mr. Zahm thinking that the noise was made
by the family dog in another part of the house. The fire was located in the
roof of the west wing of the house, and when discovered the roof was ready to
fall in. A strong breeze was blowing and the fire had such a good start that
the residence was doomed before the discovery was made.
Among the buildings destroyed was
the large residence of fifteen rooms, together with the contents. From the
residence the fire spread to the large barn, 40 x 64 feet, and from that to the
stables, sheds, pig pens, etc.
Very fortunately no one was hurt, neither
was there any live stock burned. A young team of horses was rescued from the
stable just in the nick of time. Two minutes later and they would have
perished. The contents of the barn, such as hay, feed, etc. were a loss.
Frank P. Scheiber is a tenant on the
farm, but he was not at home at the time. Mr. Zahm and two young boys were at
home. He is a man seventy-five years old. He is just convalescing from an
attack of the grip, which affected his hearing and accounts for the fire not
being discovered sooner. the supposition is that the fire originated from a
spark from the chimney.
The fire continued in its westward
course and leaped the stream and in the afternoon was burning in a woods to the
west.

Father and See His Form Laid Away --- Death is Victor
Jacob Zahm, a retired farmer and the
father of noted Catholic church people in various parts of the United states,
died at his home on North Jefferson Street Monday evening at 5:20, after an
illness of about ten days. Neuralgia of the heart was the cause. He had been a
resident of this city since 1903.
One week ago last Friday Mr. Zahm
was suddenly stricken while in bed and felt severe pains in the chest. The next
day he was able to be out in the yard, but grew worse in the evening. From that
time on his condition was on the decline. Members of the family were called
home and several were here at the time of the father's demise.
Four years ago, when the farm house
and all the other buildings at the Zahm place north of the city were burned to
the ground, the aged man, who was then too old to engage in the active work of
the farm, moved to this city and built a home on the corner of North Jefferson
and Madison streets. The old farm place was nicely arranged and well improved.
The loss of the entire group of buildings caused the family to move to this city.
Mr. Zahm was born March 3, 1828, in
Germany, in a small place called Oldsberg, near the border of France. When only
six weeks old he came to this country and located in Wayne County, Ohio. Later
his parents moved to Perry County, Ohio, where he grew to manhood. Later he
learned the carpenter's trade and followed it several years. May 6, 1849, he
was married to Miss Mary Braddock, and in 1863 come to this county and settled
in the country just north of the city. He followed the vocation of a farmer until
a few years ago, when his health and age caused him to retire and lease his
land, still remaining on the farm until the time of the fire.
In 1884 Mrs. Zahm died and he was
left to care for the family.

Notre Dame Archives Index JZA001
"John Augustine Zahm, born 14 June 1851 in New
Lexington, Ohio, entered the University of Notre Dame in 1867, received his A.
B. in 1871, and his M. A. in 1873. Ordained a priest of the Congregation of
Holy Cross in 1875, Zahm served as a professor of physics and administrator at
Notre Dame until 1892. Intensely interested in upgrading the academic programs,
Zahm also helped introduce the electric lighting and private residence hall
systems to the campus. In 1892 he began writing about the problem of dogma and
science, his most famous work being "Evolution and Dogma" published
in 1896.
In 1896 Zahm became Procurator General of the Congregation
of Holy Cross and spent the next two years in Rome, where he took an active
part in the Americanist controversy, procured papal approval of Holy Cross
College as a House of Studies for Holy Cross seminarians, and participated in
the spirited debate over theories of evolution, particularly as they concerned
his own book.
In 1898 he returned to Notre Dame as Provincial. He was
active in building up the physical plant at Notre Dame, encouraging a higher
level of scholarship, and attempting to smooth out relations with the Holy
Cross Brothers while expanding the Congregation as a whole. Opposition,
apparently both to this policies and to his personality, gained enough strength
by 1906 to account for his failure to gain election as Provincial in the
General Chapter.
Zahm spent the next fifteen years traveling, making two
extended trips to South America, and writing about the people and places that
intrigued him. His 1907 journey led to his two volumes, "Up the Orinoco
and Down the Magdalena" and "Along the Andes and Down the
Amazon," published under the H. J. Mozans. In 1913 his traveling companion
was the former president, Theodore Roosevelt. His subsequent book,
"Through South America's Southland," completed his trilogy on South
America.
Among his other published works was "Women in
Science" (1913), a popular history of women's struggle for intellectual
freedom and their accomplishment in the various scientific fields. Zahm's last
work, "From Berlin to Baghdad and Babylon" was in manuscript form
when he left for Europe in 1921 on a journey from Germany to the Middle East
during which he hoped to verify some of his data. he contracted bronchial
pneumonia and died in a hospital in Munich November 10, 1921."
Rev. Father Zahm.
From The History Of Perry County
"The log school house, the puncheon floor, "the
rude desk of the jack-knife's carved initial " have sent forth many a
successful graduate into the post-graduate course of actual life. Pigeon Roost
School on the Logan road may justly be proud of two of her alumni ---MacGahan
and Father Zahm. Both have been enlisted in the same cause---that of Liberty.
The one for political, the other for intellectual. One fought to
free people's bodies, the other to free their minds. One
with pen and sword, the other with pen and microscope. One studied the hearts
of the people, the other the great heart of nature. Both fought against enemies
of the Christian religion---the one, the Turk, the other, the agnostic. Both were
victorious.
Rev. Dr. Father Zahm, priest, scientist and author, is of
German origin on the paternal side, while his
mother belonged to the famous English family of General
Bradock of pre-Revolutionary fame.
He was born in the southern part of Jackson township, in a
log house which stood on land now owned
by Mr. James Gordon.. He worked on the farm in summer and in
the winter attended school at Pigeon
Roost, where MacGahan was also a pupil at the same time. It
is said that he was a very industrious
student, a trait that has clung to him throughout life. In
1866 at the age of sixteen he went to Notre Dame
University, where he graduated five years later with high
honors. "After his ordination to the priesthood, which took place at the
completion of his theological studies, Father Zahm, who had thus early shown a
special fondness and capacity for scientific work, was placed in charge of the
university's scientific department.
"To him, perhaps, more than to any other single
individual is the scientific school of Notre Dame indebted for the high renown
which deservedly attaches to it; for in behalf of it and the university museum,
of which he was for several years the curator, Dr. Zahm traveled far and wide
in quest
of materials wherewith to equip more fully these
departments; and on these journeys he made many valuable scientific researches.
"The doctor's reputation as a scientist is by no means
confined to this country. He is a member of more than one European scientific
society; and his published works, 'Sound and Music,' 'Bible, Science and
Faith,' and 'Evolution and Dogma,' are as well known on the other side of the
Atlantic as on this, where they are to be found in almost every public library
in the land. He is an accomplished linguist, speaking and writing several
European languages with facility; and because of his scientific researches, his
extensive travels and his recent residence in Rome, he is well and very
favorably known to the leading ecclesiastics in this and other countries."
"The doctor's attitude in regard to science is that faith and reason are
harmonious. In other words, that the teachings of science are not incompatible
with revealed religion."
"The doctor has never forgotten Perry County and the
little log school house at Pigeon Roost, where the first foundations of his
present profound and comprehensive learning were laid. Journeying to the
Pacific slope some years ago, he had as traveling companions the late Judge
Huffman and
wife, and in the course of conversation he learned that the Judge
hailed from Perry County. Whereupon the doctor jubilantly exclaimed that that
was his native county, and proceeded to ask the latest news from New Lexington
and Somerset and all the adjacent places; and when his curiosity had been in a
measure satisfied, he spoke affectionately of the days when he studied under
Master Gordon in the little log building that stood on the Logan Road."

Notes for ALBERT FRANCIS ZAHM:
Herald - Press, Huntington, Indiana, July 23, 1954
Dr. Albert F. Zahm, 92, brother of Pius Zahm and the late
Louis Zahm of Huntington, and a pioneer in aeronautical science who built a
wind tunnel for experimental purposes 20 years before the Wright brothers' famous
flight, died Friday in the student infirmary of the University of Notre Dame
campus. Zahm, a retired member of the Notre Dame faculty, had been bedfast
since his hip was fractured in a fall a year ago.
Dr. Zahm built the wind tunnel at Notre Dame in 1882. He
conducted many flight experiments at the school where he was associated for 70
years as a student, faculty member, advisor and friend. In 1925 Dr. Zahm was
awarded the Notre Dame's Leatare Medal, an annual presentation to a Catholic
distinguished in his profession. He also has received the John Hopkins
University medal in aeronautics, and the degree of doctor of science in
aeronautics from that university. He also served as director of the U. S.
Navy's aerodynamics laboratory.
From 1929 to 1946 he was chief of the aeronautical division
of the Library of Congress in Washington. He lived in retirement in Washington
until last year when he returned to the Notre Dame campus. Dr. Zahm was
graduated from Notre Dame in 1883, and remained on the campus to teach and
conduct experiments in flying. Veteran professors at the university recall how
he suspended a cable from the dome of the administration building. On the cable
he would dangle a volunteer student whose arms were attached to a crude set of
wings. Dr. Zahm also constructed gliders that flew off the roof of the science
hall on the campus. Among his inventions are a three-torque control for
airplanes, the wire tensometer, the vectorgraph protractor and the three
component umenograph.
Dr. Zahm was born in Lexington, Ohio in 1862 and moved with
his parents to Huntington County to live on the Zahm farm, now the home of
Eugene F. Zahm, a nephew. Another brother, John A. Zahm, was a priest of some
prominence in the field of Catholic education, and was the author of a book on
"Evolution and Dogma," as well as other writings. Three sisters
became nuns and were teachers and a fourth sister, Mrs. Ida Moore, now
deceased, lived near Midland, Mich.
Nieces and nephews of Dr. Zahm include Eugene F. Zahm,
William Zahm, the late George Zahm, Mrs. Dave Roberts of Evansville, and Mrs.
John Lacey, of Wheaton, ILL., all the children of the late Louis Zahm, and Miss
Florence Zahm, Paul Zahm Sr., and Harmon Zahm, Akron, children of Pius Zahm.
Funeral services will be conducted on the Notre Dame campus
at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, and burial will be in the Notre Dame Cemetery.

Dr. Albert Zahm Dies at Notre Dame July 24, 1954
South Bend -- (AP) -- Dr. Albert F. Zahm, 92, a pioneer in
American aeronautical science, died today at the University of Notre Dame
where, as a student and later a faculty member, he conducted many of his
experiments.
Dr. Zahm built a wind tunnel on the campus about 20 years
before the Wright brothers made their first flight at Kitty Hawk, N. C.
Dr. Zahm was born in New Lexington, Ohio. He was graduated
from Notre Dame in 1883 and received his master's degree two years later.
Dr. Zahm told this story of how he became interested in the
possibility of flying:
"One day in a Greek class the professor told the story
of Daedalus and Icarus, the two mythological characters who fashioned wings for
themselves so they could fly. I decided then and there to find a method of
flight.
In 1925, Notre Dame awarded its Laetare Medal to Dr. Zahm.
At that time he was director of the U. S. Navy Aerodynamical Laboratory and
from 1929 to 1946 was chief of the aeronautical division of the Library of
Congress.
Dr. Zahm never married.

Introduction to Notre Dame Research - Since the early days
of Notre Dame, research has been an important part of the academic life of the
University. The faculty's long-standing commitment to research has yielded many
significant firsts: Professor Albert Zahm built the first wind tunnel for
comparing lift to drag of aeronautical models (1882).
"A History and Philosophy of Fluid Mechanics" by
G. A. Toksty - "Zahm was the first man in the history of aerodynamics to
undertake a program of study of the nature and quantitative laws of air
friction on wind-tunnel walls."

SUNDAY MORNING, CALLING HIM TO HIS
LONG HOME ---- PROMINENT
IN BUSINESS FOR YEARS ----- FUNERAL
WEDNESDAY MORNING
Mr. John Bletzacker, the vererable
furniture dealer, of the firm Bletzacker & Sons, died very suddenly Sunday
at his home on East Main Street, of an attack of neuralgia of the heart. He had
been felling quite well during the early morning and had been sitting at a
front window watching the people pass on their way home from church, when his
son George and his wife called in to see the family a moment. About nine
o'clock he complained of feeling sick and was assisted to his bed and his
physician was called, but he got rapidly weaker and died in a few minutes with
his family gathered about him.
Mr. Bletzacker was born in Alsace
Loraine, France, Sept. 5th, 1834, and came with his father and two brothers,
Joseph, of North Columbus Street, and Martin, of Somerset, to the United States
in 1847, landing in New York on July 4th.
They proceeded to Buffalo by boat
and from there they went to Perry County, Ohio and settled near Somerset where
he resided till he was of age when he came to Lancaster and went to work in the
railroad shops. Later, he in partnership with Henry Shugart, opened up a
cabinet making business which they very successfully operated for some time,
after which he opened a furniture business with David Foster on North Columbus
Street. After dissolving partnership with Foster he opened a furniture store on
Main Hill where he continued to prosper until June of 1893, when his business
had grown too large for the building and he and his sons, Ed and Will purchased
a block on South Broad Street and opened a much larger store under the firm
name of Bletzacker & Sons and the business has grown to extensive
proportions.
On November 23, 1858, he and Miss
Mary Zahm were united in marriage at St. Joseph's Church, Perry County. To this
union eight children were born, three dying in infancy. His devoted wife and
five children, Edward, William, and George, Ella and Clark survive to mourn.
The funeral will be conducted
Wednesday morning at 8:30 o'clock from St Mary's Church by Rev. N. E. Pilger.

Mr. and Mrs. George Zahm Celebrate
Golden Wedding Anniversary Sunday
Day A Memorable One
The 50th wedding anniversary of Mr.
and Mrs. George Zahm of Wabash County was fittingly observed Sunday, June 14 by
more than 100 relatives and friends from northeastern Indiana and Ohio who
gathered at the attractive Zahm farm home, three miles north of Lagro, to
partake of a bounteous golden wedding dinner and offer their congratulations to
the aging couple. the day was a memorable one in many ways.
The Zahm home lawn was attractively
decorated with flags and bunting under which were spread the long tables with
the best things to eat from city and country. The bride's table had it's own
decorations and it's bride's cake. Following the feast the quests grouped
themselves about the honored host and hostess, after which all listened to the
speeches by Fr. Sullivan and Mutch extending congratulations and good wishes
for prosperous years to come, and the expressed hope of Mr. Zahm that all might
continue to enjoy life for years to come.
In addition to these good wishes,
Mr. and Mrs. Zahm were recipients of several showers of gold pieces and silver
together with three gold rosaries presented by relatives as tokens of lasting
esteem, while many who were unable to be present sent from a distance their
letters of felicitation. Among these was a letter read from Omer D. Green a
nephew, formerly of Lagro, and now of Nocoma, Texas.
The bride of 50 years ago was born
in Perry County, Ohio in 1839; the grey-haired groom in the same County in
1838, and they were married - she as Miss Mary M. Clark on June 14, 1864. They
lived in Ohio a year and moved to Huntington, Ind., in the fall of 1868 they
moved to Wabash County, settling on a farm near their present home. The next
year they purchased of Judge Conner, of Wabash, the 80 acre home where they
have resided ever since and where the golden wedding day was celebrated. With
the exception of one child which died in infancy, the entire family is living
although Mrs. Zahm for three years has been an invalid as a result of a stroke
of paralysis sustained about five years ago. Mr. Zahm is hale and hearty and
does much of his own farm work despite his 76 years, not a few of which he put
in clearing his present home which was woodland when the young couple moved
upon it 45 years ago.
Besides Mr. and Mrs. George Zahm,
among those present at the golden wedding celebration were Mrs. Mary
Bletzacker, the only remaining sister of Mr. Zahm, who lives in Lancaster,
Ohio, and the following sons and daughters - Clem Zahm, wife and daughter,
Marie of Wabash County, Edward Zahm, wife and daughter Virginia, of Elkhart;
Clara McGuire, husband and daughter, Pearl, of Lagro, and Rose Zahm, living at
home. Another son Lew Zahm of Palestine, Texas, was unable to attend.
Others present at the gathering were
Mrs. Agusta Bennett and daughter Marie, of Junction City, Ohio; Jerome
Anderson, of East Fultonham, Ohio; D. Bletzacker and family, Mrs. George
Schwartz, son and daughter, Mrs. James McManigal, Miss Mary Scherschel, Bertha
Banister, Leslie Alexander and Ed Bruns all of Fort Wayne; Lewis V. Zahm and
family, Pius Kraig and wife, Jerome Zahm, Mrs. Pius Zahm, son and daughter, C.
W. Zahm and family, Pius Clark and family, and George Zahm Jr., all of

History of Wabash County Page 793
GEORGE JOSEPH ZAHM. About forty-five
years ago George Joseph Zahm began his activities as a farmer and citizen in
Wabash County. He undertook the pioneer work of clearing off a tract of land
and converting its acres into cultivated fields, and the result of those labors
are now witnessed in his beautiful country home of eighty acres in Lagro
Township, about two miles east of the Village of Speiker, on the south side of
the road. Mr. Zahm and his family have always been known for their quiet
prosperity and solid integrity, and such has been the record of his past years
that he can rest content with his accomplishments and enjoy the prosperity won
through long years. Mr. Zahm has lived in Wabash County since the fall of 1868.
He was born in Perry County, Ohio on
October 7, 1838, and has already rounded out more than three-quarters of a
century of human life. His parents were Nicholas and Elizabeth (Garhart) Zahm.
The parents were born in Germany and were married in Oldenberg. While living in
the Fatherland, Nicholas Zahm practiced the trade of shoemaker, but after his
marriage and after six children had been born they emigrated to the United
States, where three other children subsequently came into their household. For
ten years their home was in Wayne County, Ohio, where the father bought a farm,
and, selling that place, he moved to Perry County, Ohio, and bought a place
containing sixth-two acres. Both he and his wife passed away on that old
homestead, she in 1857 at the age of sixth-five, and he in 1874 on his
eighty-seventh birthday. Their children were named as follows: Nicholas, Margaret,
Catherine, Ann, Peter, Jocob, John, all of whom are now deceased; Mary, widow
of John Bletzacker of Lancaster, Ohio, and George J., the youngest.
George J. Zahm spent his early
boyhood in Perry County, Ohio. When he was six or seven years of age he began
walking back and forth to the district school, which was kept in a log
building, and he spent many weary hours sitting on the rough log benches, made
from split chestnut trees, smoothed off on the upper side, and supported by
wooden pins driven into the underside.. The work on a pioneer farm was never
ending, and consequently the boys of that generation found more practical
training in plowing and planting and in swinging an ax than they
got in the schools. George Zahm from
an early age took his place in the woods and in the fields, helped clear the
land and assisted his father with the cultivation until he was about sixteen
years of age. At that time he began working at the carpenter's trade, under his
brother Jacob, and for about ten years that was the source of his livelihood.
One June 14, 1864, he married Mary
M. Clark, a daughter of Francis and Rebecca (Flowers) Clark. This family had
earlier settled in Perry County, and their home was about one mile
from the Zahm farm. Mary Clark was
born there, and she and George Zahm were children together, and were thus
married out of the same neighborhood and had the same early associations.
In the fall of 1865 Mr. and Mrs.
Zahm moved to Huntington Indiana, which was then a comparatively small village,
though a hustling business place. In Huntington Mr. Zahm spent about three
years in the carpenter's trade and was gradually getting a little bit ahead in
the world. His wife's parents had come to Huntington at the same time, buying a
farm near the
county seat, where they lived until
their death. All made the trip from Ohio with horses and wagons, very much
after the pioneer style.
In 1868 Mr. Zahm took a contract to
cut timber for his brother-in-law, William Anderson, who had bought a large
tract of timber land from John Roach of Huntington. After about one year with
Anderson, Mr. Zahm bought his present farm in Wabash County. Its former owner
was Judge J. D.. Connor of Wabash. Nearly every acre of the land was at the
time covered with heavy timber, and there was not a building or improvement on
the farm. Mr Zahm put up a little cabin, which is now used as a kitchen of his
more commodious home, and from time to time as his means and time allowed, he
added to his residence, until it is now both an attractive and comfortable
home, As situated behind the trees and well back from the public highway. As
soon as he had provided for the simplest living necessities, Mr. Zahm undertook
the clearing of the timber from his land. He cut and hauled the logs to the
canal at Lagro, which was then an important shipping point, and thus practical
all the merchantable timber on his land went by water route to market. In this
way he gradually cleared off his fields, tiled it and otherwise improved the
land, and for many years followed general farming with increasing prosperity.
About three years ago he began renting out his fields, and has since retired
from active business.
Mr. and Mrs. Zahm are now living
comfortably at their old homestead, which represents their joint labors and economy,
and their children are all married and have left home, except Miss
Rose, the youngest, who lives at
home and looks after her parents with admirable fifial devotion. Mr. Zahm is a
self-made man in the fullest sense of the term, and everything that has come to
him is the result of hard and honest toil. He is a man of his word, which once
given is never broken; is fair and just in all his dealings, and has a host of
friends in Wabash County.
Mr. and Mrs. Zahm are the parents of
the following children: William Clement, who married Cora Hamilton and has one
child, Marie; Pius Francis, the second child of Mr. and Mrs. George J. Zahm,
died aged about one year; Louis, who married Melinda Hamilton, a sister of Mrs.
William C. Zahm, and she died in August, 1909; Clara, who is now Mrs. John T.
McGuire and has one child, Pearl; Edward, who married Bessie Frushure, has a
daughter, Virginia, and Miss Rose. The Zahms are members of St. Patrick's
Catholic Church at Lagro, and Mr. Zahm was for twenty-five years honored with
the position of trustee in the church. On Sunday, June 14, 1914, Mr. and Mrs.
Zahm celebrated their golden wedding.

DEATH OF ALBERT J. BENNETT
After a prolonged illness of a
spinal and nervous affliction, Albert J. Bennett aged 56, departed this life at
his late home in Junction City, on Thursday night. He was an efficient
telegraph operator and held responsible positions in Zanesville, Cambridge and

faithful to every trust.
Until a year ago, he was active in
business circles in Junction City, taking a prominent part in the oil industry.
A widow, and three children survive. The children are William, a telegrapher,
at Junction City and Misses Frances and Marie of the home. Four brothers and
four sisters also survive. He was an honest, upright man, a devoted husband and
father, and held the esteem of those who knew him.

IN MEMORY OF ALBERT J. BENNETT
BENNETT, ALBERT J. -- Born April
25th, 1857, at Whippstown, Ohio, died at Junction City, Ohio, March 21, 1912
aged 54 years, 10 months and 26 days.
Al Bennett is dead. As the sun was
setting behind the western hills, death came to our friend, carrying him into a
far country, whose boundaries, God alone can map.
A. J. Bennett was not an ordinary,
but a common man. In the railroad world and in the business and social life of
his community he leaves a long line of loyal and loving friends. In this sad
hour that now shadows his home, the sympathy of true hearts has been touched
with sympathy for those who will miss him as husband, father, and friend.
He was a useful man.
It is not best to lament the death
of a man such as A. J. Bennett. Each day, for him, saw some work completed or
some new work planned to start on its way. Every man that lives this life has
faults or what appears to others to be faults. In life, A. J. Bennett was frank
to confess what he deemed wrong in his life and living so when death came he
had no confession to make those who watched and hoped that he might live.
For several years the deceased has
not been a well man. But through his long suffering he bore it all patiently
and with true Christian fortitude. He had been confined to his room since
August 1st last.
It was April 25th, 1857, on his
parents farm near Whippstown, Perry County, that A. J. Bennett was born. When
13 years of age he moved with his parents to Rehoboth. His early boyhood was
spent on the farm and in the winter months attended the country school. At an
early age he took up railroading as an occupation. For years he was a fireman
on the Lake Shore roads, but later mastered telegraphy, which he followed for
eighteen years at various points. He was agent and operator at Bristol,
Junction City, Quaker City, Zanesville and other cities, but he was compelled
to retire from the service 12 years ago owing to failing health.
He claimed his bride, May 20th,
1884, Miss Augusta Anderson, of Bristol, and to this happy union three children
were born, all of whom survive. They are William, Frances, and Marie, all of
the home. Besides the widow and children, four brothers and four sisters are
mourning his death viz: John, George, and Richard of Columbus; James, of
Wilbren. Mrs. Nicholas Hammond, and Miss Elizabeth Bennett, Columbus; Mrs.
Charles Longstreth of Rehoboth and Mrs. James Weiner, Santoy.
The funeral services were held from
St. Patrick's church, Junction City, on March 25th, a requiem high mass being
celebrated for the repose of his soul, by his pastor, Rev. William O'Sullivan,
the same who officiated at his marriage nearly 28 years since. In stress and
storm A. J. Bennett was as rock to oak. To every friend he stood four square
and in times of peace he was as sun and flower.
Our life is such that we do not know
whether it is best for us to meet the sleep of death before our lips have
learned to form a word, or at the end of life's uneven way. We do not know.
It is not for us to pass judgement
on the living or the dead, but it is meant that when the final summons comes,
whether like a flash from skies that are bright and fair, or out of the
uninvited shadows, that we are ready to journey to that land where let us hope,
will rise the Unending and Eternal Dawn.
Requiescat in pace.
